Why does it seem like every derby girl I know loves bruises? Whether it's flaunting their own, or ogling their teammates', derby girls love bruises!
I'm proud of my bruises, and I show them off to anyone who's willing to look. I feel like the colourful blotches of burst capillaries show that I'm
awesome ... no, I think I was right on my first try; I'm awesome. Because, bruises are awesome, and in turn, make me awesome(r). I have one on my thigh right now that I got yesterday, during my first scrimmage. I'm so proud of it! I'm proud mostly because I know I took a good hit, fell pretty hard, then got right back up as quick as I could to rejoin the pack. And, I like that every time I take a step with my right leg I'm reminded of how I got the bruise, and how wonderful derby is.
Roller derby really is a tough sport with tough chicks (who like to wear short shorts and fishnets). If there's one thing I learned about roller derby in general yesterday, it's that there is
no room for whiners. Only victims complain about bruises; victors boast about bruises.
So show off your bruises with pride, and tell the tales of how you got them. Earn those merit badges, ladies!
